The use of pentafluoropropionic anhydride, trifluoromethylbenzoyl chloride and pentafluorobenzoyl chloride gave fluoro-chitin derivatives with 40, 10 and 5% substitution, respectively. Fluorination of chitin was achieved by facile homogenous reaction of chitin solution with diethyl amino sulfur trifluoride.
