Improve your chemical lab results with the EYELA Rotary Evaporators!
With EYELA Rotary Evaporators, you can easily reduce the volume of a solvent through evaporation by distributing it as a thin film across the interior of a vessel at elevated temperature and reduced pressure which promotes the quick removal of excess solvent from less volatile samples at increased efficiency.
Applying vacuum is necessary in most laboratory applications as it provide faster evaporation and safer rotary evaporator operation.
Vacuum system selection depends on 2 main factors:
Solvent boiling point:
Determining the vacuum level needed depends on your desired evaporation vapour temperature. Solvents with a low boiling point such as acetone, methylene chloride and pentane, do not require as deep vacuum to evaporate compared to high boiling point solvents such as acetonitrile, benzene, and toluene. You must ensure that the pump is capable of reaching level of vacuum to achieve your desired vapour temperature of evaporation.
Bath Temperature:
The aim is to make sure the vacuum system is able to provide the necessary vacuum level and achieve the desired vapour temperature. If the mixture is not sensitive to elevated temperatures, increasing the bath temperature will speed the evaporation process and reduce the need for a deep vacuum pump.
EYELA provides 2 selection of vacuum system, aspirator and diaphragm pump. Generally, aspirator can provide basic vacuum level while diaphragm pump is able to provide deep vacuum (<8 mbar). Furthermore, our diaphragm pump has superior chemical resistance against aggressive solvents.
The 10/30/50 rule
For more efficient evaporation, water bath and condenser temperature must be coordinated with desired vapour temperature. Generally, we recommend water bath temperature is 20oC higher than vapour temperature and the condenser temperature must be min 20oC lower. In order to get the desired vapour temperature, a certain vacuum level may be needed.
For example: For acetone to have 30 ºC vapour temperature, vacuum of 399 mbar is needed. Therefore, the
recommended water bath temperature is 50 ºC and the condenser min temperature is 10 ºC. Having higher water bath and condenser temperature may cost overloading to the condensation capability.
Do you need a vacuum controller?
Too much vacuum can cause foaming and bumping, and too little vacuum will slow your evaporations. Our chemical resistant diaphragm pump, recirculating chiller and water bath can be controlled with vacuum controller to optimize your evaporations for both speed and sample protection. Also, if you have multiple solvents, it is generally good to use a vacuum controller.
